This rare jacket comes from approximately 1977-1978 and was designed by Mademoiselle Chanel's longtime assistants Jean Cazaubon and Yvonne Dudel. Haute Couture pieces are hard to come by. Limited and rare, this number cut in a beautiful striped fantasy tweed, features striking lion-head gold-tone buttons. Lion - one of the symbols of the House of Chanel - represents Gabrielle Chanel's zodiac sign, Leo.
What's special about this piece is the fact that it is an haute couture jacket. Made-to-order, numbered item that requires over 100 hours of work and over 30 measurements on the body, several fittings, and assembled by hand in Chanel's atelier with the designer's final approval. Today prices for Chanel haute couture start at about 40000 euro for a suit. A true luxury, with less than 3000 haute-couture items sold every year in the 1970s (that's less than 300 pieces a month).
